1. 5 Facts You Need to Know About the Killing of Korryn Gaines by Baltimore Police. [via Heavy]
Korryn Gaines, a 23-year-old black woman, was shot and killed by Baltimore County Police after the police attempted to serve a warrant from a traffic stop violation. Gaines’s 5-year-old son was also wounded and is expected to survive.
“Police say an officer opened fire after Gaines said ‘if you don’t leave, I’m going to kill you.’”
While details around what happened are not clear, we do know that the police came to Korryn Gaines’s apartment to serve a warrant for an unpaid traffic ticket.
Traffic tickets disproportionately affect the poor and can keep folks in cycles of poverty because each time one does not pay a ticket, there are increased fines or jail time, which increases financial burdens.

2. Startups Fight Back Against Airbnb’s Discrimination Policies. [via Vice]
Thousands of Black people have posted on Twitter using the hashtag #AirbnbWhileBlack to share experiences of discrimination by Airbnb hosts.
“A Harvard Business School study found that Airbnb guests with names of African American origin were 16 percent less likely to receive a response from hosts, raising concerns as to whether implicit bias is baked into the platform itself.”
In response to Airbnb’s discrimination, Rohan Gilkes created Innclusive, which is a short-term rental platform that creates a community in which customers “travel with respect, dignity, and love, regardless of race, sexual orientation, [or] gender identity.”

Whether black people are armed or unarmed, we are still gunned down by the police with impunity.
Yet this is not the case when white people are armed.
“We know that police somehow manage to de-escalate, disarm and not kill white people everyday.”
Dylann Roof murdered 9 black people and was brought Burger King by the police while Alton Sterling was murdered at point-blank.
