1. Justice Department is Ending the Use of Federal Private Prisons. [via The Washington Post]
The U.S. Department of Justice plans to end the use of private prisons, citing safety and effectiveness concerns.
“The fact of the matter is that private prisons don’t compare favorably to Bureau of Prisons facilities in terms of safety or security or services, and now with the decline in the federal prison population, we have both the opportunity and the responsibility to do something about that.”
Over the next few years, the Justice Department’s decision will close 13 privately run facilities in the Bureau of Prisons system.

2. 7 Chicago Police Officers Fired for Lying about Laquan McDonald Shooting. [via Atlanta Black Star]
Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson has terminated seven officers who provided false information about the shooting of Laquan McDonald.
In addition, evidence has also revealed that Chicago Police intimidated civilian witnesses.
