Did You Know a Black Man Patented the Envelope Seal?

On September 21, 1891, F.W. Leslie patented the envelope seal (patent number 590,325).

Yes, that’s right, a Black man revolutionized the way we send mail to one another. Before Leslie’s invention, letters would fall out of envelopes.

Mailing services today would not be what they are if it was not for Lewis’s accomplishment.

Unfortunately, there’s not much written in history about Lewis’s life or upbringing, and this reminds us exactly why it’s so important for us to document and tell our own stories. If we don’t tell our own stories, no one will.
